The "ims"

Everybody had to drive giants out of their land before they could settle it.
Israel had to drive out the Anakims, Moab conquered the Emims and the Horims, and the Ammonites had to contend with the Zamzummims. Deut 2:10,11,20,21
The "ims" were giants.
Big, tall giants.
They were so big they made strong men feel like they were mere grasshoppers Num 13:33 and their cites were "walled up to heaven" Deut 1:28 Who could stand against the "ims"?

Some fought them by might and power with flashing swords and mighty chariots. Chedorlaomer gathered four other kings together and with a massive army conquered the Emims, the Rephaims, and the Zuzims. Gen 14:5 Their sheer force of numbers overcame even the "ims". They were giant slayers.

But one humble man, with a motly army of 318 household servants and shepherd men, took on that massive giant-slaying army in the name of the Lord and sent them running for their lives. In one night they "smote them and pursued them" all the way to Damascus (70 or 80 miles!!)

Chedorlaomer would have laughed his guts out if someone had told him to be afraid of that little hodge-podge army of window-washers and sheep-shearers!! How ridiculous! But ah, be careful what you laugh at, Chedorlaomer! Goliath laughed when he saw scrawny little David coming with a sling-shot too. But the laughter of them both turned to screams of terror when these simple, humble servants turned out to be the armies of heaven in disguise.

They conquered the giants. "Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts."

Today I've got giants to fight.. Not flesh and blood giants. Not giants in government agencies or secret societies. Not even giants in my own beloved church. There may be giants there, but I haven't been called to fight them today. Today I have to wrestle "against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." Eph 6:12 I have giants to fight in the secluded fortress of my mind, and they have built a mighty stronghold, "walled up to heaven."
The Pride-ims, the Lust-ims, the Selfish-ims, the Anger-ims and the You-name-it-ims.
They can be cast down--oh, yes they can--by His Spirit.

The Giants always fall when the Spirit's doing the fighting. Every time.
So why don't we see more giants falling? Why are the "ims" beating us day after day after day?
We've gotten distracted.
We're fighting the Spirit instead of letting him fight for us.
The Spirit brings us a conviction and we attack it with a million excuses, ignore it, shove it away...
We can't afford to fight conviction!! Surrendering to conviction is the only way we can win.
If we keep ignoring convictions they will eventually go away, leaving us holding our miserable little slingshot facing a hundred wicked giants with spears that weigh 15 lbs. 1 Sam 17:7.

"Today if you hear His voice, harden not your hearts." Heb 3:14
Surrender is sweet. The only things He takes away are the things that make us miserable, and He always gives something better in return.
Lord, make me willing to be made willing.

Thank for sharing about the "ims" in worship this morning, Daddo. Got me thinking.. ;-)
